We are a department of two full-time specialist and 3 experienced members of staff. We all share in the same vision.
Our curriculum map is designed to develop and challenge students’ language and literature skills from year seven. Students will be incorporating GCSE language skills through the teaching of Cannon Literature texts throughout key stage three in order to: engage, motivate and raise levels of achievement in the core skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This will install confidence and competence in the final year eleven examinations and thus allow students to meet or exceed predictions. The units are theme based to incorporate didactic and deep thinking teaching and learning.
Our current curriculum model at Key Stage 4 incorporates early entry English Literature in Year 10 and English Language early in Year 11. This proved to be highly successful in the 2016 – 2017 GCSE examinations.
We also strive to encourage a desire for independent learning and students will engage in a range of curriculum related enrichment activities, visits and trips to enhance and promote their passion for Language and Literature outside of the classroom.
The English department is a committed and highly motivated team with a personal interest in every boy’s highest achievement in our unified vision for success. An example of this is a visit to the Mayflower Theatre for Year 10 to watch a performance of ‘A Curious Incident of the dog in the Night time’ to support and extend their understanding of the GCSE modern literature text.
