The transition from primary to secondary school is a key time in any child’s education and we work hard to ensure that it is a smooth transition. Mrs. Bellamy is the Senior Leader in charge of the transition process. She works very closely with primary schools in acquiring information on every child to understand their individual needs. Mrs. Bellamy visits each child in their primary school to discuss their move to Wyvern College, outlining key information for their induction day in July and answering any questions they may have.
In addition to this she meets every Year 6 teacher to discuss progress, strengths and concerns as well as any particular interests your son may have so that we have a fuller picture of who your child is before they even reach our doors. Additional visits and attendance at Year 6 annual review meetings can also be arranged to ensure continuity of support.
All Year 6 pupils attend their Induction day in July. They have the opportunity to meet their form tutor and peers from their new form groups. Additionally, parents are invited to Wyvern for Year 6 information evening to inform them about their child’s transition. Pupils and parents tell us that they find these events very helpful. Boys will join one of our 3 Houses; Longford, Rockbourne or Wilton and their forms will be known as 7L, 7R and 7W.
Assemblies will vary between Whole School, Key Stage, Year Group and Houses to develop a stronger sense of community. Cross country, inter-form and sports day competitions also support the House structure and your son will quickly feel a real part of our school. The Head Boy and his two deputies, with the help of a small team of prefects, are each allocated a Year 7 tutor group to support through their first year.
They will attend the induction day and evening initially to meet the boys and subsequently organise games and activities to help new pupils integrate into their pastoral group during registration times. Whilst a ‘big school’ in many Year 6 eyes, Wyvern is actually a very small secondary school with a family feel where staff genuinely know and care for each individual boy.
Year 5 students are actively encouraged to come and experience some of the many exciting opportunities available to them at Wyvern College. Throughout the
academic year children are invited to join us for Masterclasses in a variety of subjects, both practical and academic. Additionally we have a Year 5 taster day in July offering a variety of experiences for your child to engage in. These days are invaluable for dispelling anxieties about secondary schools and we would warmly encourage your son to attend and see for himself what we have to offer.
